What is the Varsity Center Project? As of February 2006, construction on the new Varsity Stadium (now called the 'Varsity Centre') was commenced, and will be available in the summer of 2007.
The Varsity Centre - which includes a 5,000-seat stadium, 400m eight-lane track, state-of-the-art artificial turf field and a dome for winter use - is a sport and recreation facility like no other. It represents a new vision at U of T focused on creating a rich experience for all students that extends far beyond the classroom. From competitive athletes to students aiming to learn a new sport or simply go for a jog on a fabulous outdoor track, Varsity Centre creates an environment that welcomes and encourages all levels of physical activity.
The new facilities will push the Varsity Blues sports program to the next level, enhancing high performance training and competition in sports like track and field, football and soccer. The Centre will also strengthen community outreach by offering a range of programs open to the community as well as a place for local fans to enjoy tremendous university-level competitive sport.
When all phases are complete, Varsity Centre will encompass an integrated high performance and teaching facility, where research informs teaching, coaching, co-curricular sports, general physical activity and community outreach.
Varsity Centre gives a big boost to sport, recreation and academic programs at U of T, creating untold opportunities for students and community members to compete, train, learn and play.
